Nice photos Larry. Ben probably did not realize that he has stopped at that Chevron station in the background of the photo from Kayenta, AZ. Many years ago on our way to the bike trade show in Las Vegas we had to stop there to nurse a hangover that Benny got from the previous evening in Durango. Ask Btron about the Diablo chicken wings, he will likely enjoy recounting the story.

From the RAAM blog:

Ben Popp racing Secrets

Between Cortez and Durango, Colorado we rolled our mammoth SUV media ride up to the side of a cruising Ben Popp. Ben is the leading American soloist male rider in RAAM 2009 and has worked hard to earn that placement. A native of Minnesota, Popp placed a trainer in a sauna and put in some hard miles.

He tells us in his friendly and welcoming way that he has been sleeping 3 hours a day and changing his clothes every three hours. A system which he seems pleased with. “We will keep to this plan until the Mississippi”, and then he implied that if an adjustment is required they will address it.

His ride, demeanor and condition all seemed excellent.

From the RAAM blog:

"As Gerhard Gulewicz and Peter Oyler sit pretty in fifth and sixth, there have been a few movers and shakers in the rest of the top ten. Riding well in the Colorado mountains, rookie and leading American racer Ben Popp shot up to seventh place, while strong Briton Jim Rees moved up from thirteenth to tenth. He is now just 17 minutes behind Julian Sanz Garcia."
